Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty managing stress and anxiety during times of change or uncertainty. This emotional dysregulation is a characteristic of ASD and can often result in challenging behavior. Challenging behaviors may occur if the student does not have the ability to seek or accept help when stressed, calm down and find alternative activity before outburst occurs and/or recover after an outburst. This training will help you recognize signs of stress or anxiety and provide strategies for supporting students with ASD address their own responses to stress.

10 Things to Know About Autism

This training module is intended to assist the Oklahoma School Districts and meet the requirements of Senate Bill 2071 to provide “a minimum awareness of the characteristics of autism and children, resources available, and an introduction to positive behaviors of ports to challenging behaviors”. The training is geared towards general education teachers pre-kindergarten through third grade and is also appropriate for any other staff working with students with ASD. This module is based on the premise that children with autism should be included in all settings within the school environment, including the regular education classroom. Too broad terms, autism and autism spectrum disorder are frequently used to refer to the entire autism spectrum.
